National Trust – Cliveden

Close to the banks of the River Thames, Cliveden has been a presence in the Buckinghamshire countryside for hundreds of years. It has been a home for dukes, lords and for famous families like the Astors, it has hosted high-profile socialites and glittering parties, gained notoriety as part of the Profumo Affair and the ensuing government downfall, and even found use as a hospital in World War 1.

Now owned by the National Trust, the property and its gardens are enjoyed by thousands of visitors every year, and it was a privilege to be asked to work on several renovation projects on the 80-acre site.

These renovation projects included structural repairs to the visitor shop, as well as a range of works on Kennel Cottage, Laundry Cottage, Old Dairy Cottage and Windsor Lodge. These properties are all rented out by the Trust as holiday lets.

We’ve also carried out sympathetic improvements for the estate office, rangers’ office, welfare units and other areas on the estate which have required some care.

Working at an iconic location that attracts thousands of visitors each year certainly has its challenges; work must be carried out as sympathetically and as unobtrusively as possible whilst also ensuring projects are completed quickly, to budget and with stringent health and safety requirements.

Many of the buildings we’ve worked on at Cliveden are of either Grade I or II listed status which requires specialist skills and experience.

Clivedon is a lovely place to work, set in a beautiful landscape, and with so much history. It’s the perfect embodiment of our credentials when it comes to heritage and our desire to preserve amazing buildings.
